The L.I.S.A. AVO association and the LA FENICE committee were present at the reopening of the Pediatric Oncohematology department of the Policlinico Umberto I.
Families of small victims were provided assistance in reviewing medical records and other documentation. Specialists, lawyers and forensic doctors were involved, also to evaluate the opportunity of a lawsuit or claim for damages.
Help was offered to families of small patients by referring their cases to specialists and centers or by submitting medical records (examinations and treatment plans) for a second opinion.
We have committed ourselves to the defense of pediatric oncology/hematology departments from the risk of closure or disempowerment, to the opening of new centers and to the reactivation of closed departments.
We have identified donors for the reactivation of the department at the Policlinico Umberto I Hospital in Rome.
We have kept close contact with the structures of Regione Lazio involved in the reorganization of the Healthcare System, focusing on pediatric and adolescent healthcare and the need to promote alternatives, especially public ones, to avert the risk of creating a monopoly.
We collected requests from the chief physician and specialists of some "suffering" public departments, whom we pledged to help with specific subscriptions for the purchase of clinical equipment.
In July, the Pediatric Oncology/Hematology Department at the Umberto I Hospital in Rome was reopened, following an open competition for the director and physicians. The department had been closed without notice in March 2020, leaving public pediatrics in Lazio uncovered in this specialty.
The association has offered its cooperation in many ways, including the provision of scholarships for young medical specialists.
It is helping the newly reborn department and the Pediatric Ward of the Policlinico in general by gathering their needs and taking action to support them with all the means at its disposal.
At the Polyclinic of Rome, the Association's help was also offered to General Hematology.
